skeletons sink, don't you know
she was smart enough
to know that the rain didn't fall
just because her
day seemed more black
than blue; she knew
it came from
the tears the ocean sang when
it thought nobody could
hear, but
that wasn't the case
when lightning
cracked
and
shattered
whenever it struck bone.
she always was more
of an island
than a shore, but
her docks were all
rotted away and
they had left nothing but
skeletons to hang
onto; her lighthouse
held no lantern
since
the ocean had
doused her flame to ash
oh so very
long ago.
fish never bit at
what was left of her brittle
bones, but they
made homes
amongst her ribs
where the coral grew
in patches so much
